Onslow County Schools Virtual Academy

Onslow County Schools Virtual Academy received a $1.5 million grant, College and Career Ready: Opening Doors with Virtual Opportunities, from DoDEA that was written by Dr. Beth Folger and team.   This initiative is a 5 year process aimed at “offering greater choice, flexibility, and options to students.” Funding will be used to create an innovative, flexible and student friendly virtual learning environment. We will meet the students where they are and take them to where they need to be!

The grant will be used to enhance the education of all our student, but has a special focus on the military child. Each school year, 47% of OCS students transfer internally or externally. To help ease this transition, military students enrolled in the academy will be allowed to remain enrolled for the entire school year, should they receive military orders to other duty stations.  Too many times, our students are losing credits when they transfer in or out mid-year.  This academy will provide stability and support for this special population regardless of domicile status in Onslow County.

The grant will also help establish a Virtual Student 2 Student program.  This will encourage the students to engage in social activities with their online peers. The goal is to “create in a virtual environment, a program that will decrease student uneasiness with transitioning into the school system, increase preparation of transfer students to meet NC Academic requirements and make counseling that is more specialized available for military students.”  The academy will offer monthly family nights, fieldtrips and other social opportunities to all students enrolled.

We opened the Virtual Academy in January 2017 to 85 students. Those students are enrolled in over 200 online classes.

We will offer courses to students at all 7 Onslow County high schools. You must be in grades 9-12 in the 2017-2018 school year in order to be eligible. Below are the minimum requirements.

1) Have a minimum of 2.0 GPA

2) Be in and remain in good academic standing

3) Take at least 2 courses through the Onslow Virtual Academy each semester
