Southwest High School Principal Timothy Foster has been named OCS 2017-2018 Principal of the Year and 2018 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year.

School administrators made the surprise announcement Monday morning, October 16,

Foster has served Onslow County Schools for 26 years, 11 as a principal. He has been principal at Southwest High School for the past eight years.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and began teaching Social Studies at Hunters Creek Middle School. He earned a Masters of School Administration from East Carolina University.  He is serving his second term on the Board of Directors for N.C. High School Athletic Association and he currently serves as president of the Onslow County Principal and Assistant Principals’ Association.

Associate Superintendent of Human Resources Barry Collins presided over the selection process.  He acknowledged all the school principals who do a wonderful job each day. In presenting the POY to Foster, he said, what stood out the most in the nominations, is Foster’s ability to build relationships and create a family-like environment with his students and his staff.

Several faculty members nominated Foster for POY.  Chelsea D’Zurilla said Foster has implemented several programs and projects within the school to meet students’ needs and support their success.  Through Power Hour initiatives, students are provided individualized support in all educational areas. “Mr. Foster has provided immeasurable support both inside the classroom and within my coaching endeavors.”  Tiffany Messer said, “He is always there to listen to concerns of his staff be they educational or personal.”  Polly Blake and Renee Otero said the following in their nomination of Foster for POY, “Hailing from a family tradition of service through education, Mr. Foster is deeply committed to educational quality for all students.  One of the most effective ways in which (he) nourishes relationships is by maintaining high visibility among the student body … as a result, our students feel more invested in our school community.”

Foster will move on to compete for regional POY with other southeastern POY recipients.  Eight regional finalists will be named and one will be selected as 2018 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year.  The POY program is sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Wells Fargo.
