    JOINT STATEMENT ON SCHOOL SAFETY 

    This week, our thoughts and prayers have certainly been with the students, staff, families, and community of Uvalde, Texas. Tuesday’s tragic events are a stark reminder of the value of life and the efforts needed to protect it.

    OCS HOSTS EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION EVENT

    On Tuesday, May 24, Onslow County Schools hosted the inaugural Excellence in Education event, where educators were recognized for their hard work and dedication.   

    The event, which featured speakers, student performances, and a glamorous red-carpet entrance, recognized the work of more than 65 teachers, administrators, and support staff through an elevated award ceremony experience.   

    OCS is proud to be home to thousands of educators who show a true passion for student success. At Excellence in Education, the district not only named 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year Kayla Anderson and 2022-2023 Assistant Principal of the year Courtney Moffitt, but also recognized teachers and administrators for their unique skills and expertise in areas such as technology, STEM, math, literacy, mentorship, and more.

    STATE OF THE COMMUNITY 

    Dr. Collins speaks at the State of the Community Lunch

    Earlier this week, the Eastern North Carolina Regional Skills Center hosted the State of the Community Luncheon. At this event, leaders from local governments, military bases, and community organizations gathered to discuss the progress our community has made over the last year and the anticipated challenges to come.  

    OCS Superintendent Dr. Barry Collins spoke on the panel and shared that he is proud of the work our staff did to keep instruction as our top priority throughout COVID-19. He also shared that, like many other organizations, staffing is one of the largest challenges we will face moving forward.  

    ONSLOW AG DAYS 

    OCS students participate in Ag Days 

    OCS 2nd graders enjoyed a day on the farm at Onslow Ag Days this week!  

    Students learned firsthand about farm animals, plant germination, beekeeping, soil conservation and much more. Thank you to the NC Cooperative Extension, the agricultural experts on hand, Richlands High School FFA students, Hog Wild and all who were involved in making this a great opportunity for our students! 

    LAST DAY FOR EARLY COLLEGE 

    Today is the last day of school for our Onslow Early College High School students. Thank you all for a great school year, and we hope you have a fantastic summer!

    CVES REDISTRICTING 

    Redistricting Information 

    OCS is looking forward to opening the new Clear View Elementary School in August 2022! 

    As we prepare for the new school and the redistricting that will accompany it, we encourage our families to familiarize themselves with the approved maps.  

    Redistricting maps for the opening of Clear View Elementary, after a series of public hearings and open meetings, were approved by the Onslow County Board of Education on April 6, 2021. Affected districts include Richlands Elementary, Heritage Elementary, Meadow View Elementary, Southwest Elementary, Blue Creek Elementary, Stateside Elementary, and Carolina Forest Elementary. Families who will be impacted by the upcoming changes can expect direct contact with more detailed information in the days to come.

    Tonight, the Onslow Early College High School Class of 2022 will walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. If you are unable to attend tonight’s ceremony, but would like to watch from afar, check out the livestream on the district’s YouTube Channel.

    ART IN THE AIRPORT 

    Art students take a photo with their teacher

    Bright colors and visions of summer fun are brightening up the walls of OAJ in the latest installment of Art in the Airport.   

    Students, teachers and families gathered at Albert J. Ellis Airport on Monday, May 9, 2022 to celebrate the opening of “Art in the Airport: Summer.” OCS has partnered with OAJ to showcase the talents of our visual arts students for several years now, and the latest installment features 19 beautiful works of art from the district’s middle schools.   

    If you find yourself travelling through OAJ this summer, be sure to check out the excellent work of some of our best student artists!

    EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION WEEK

    As we close out Employee Appreciation Week, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the employees of Onslow County Schools. Our staff are the heart of our district and make all we do possible. 

    We are proud to have each and every one of you on our team! Thank you for keeping our students in your hearts and serving the mission of “excellence in education” every day! 

    STUDENTS RECEIVE S.A.T. SCHOLARSHIPS 

    Julia Eesley accepts the Dr. Kay B. Gresham Memorial Scholarship

    Fifty-two members of the Class of 2022 were honored on Thursday, May 5, as they accepted scholarships from Sponsors for Academic Talent.   

    Students from high schools across the county, including the very first scholar from Onslow Virtual Secondary School, gathered at the Eastern North Carolina Regional Skills Center for an evening of celebration. Altogether, the students were awarded $47,500 to pursue their postsecondary education.   

    Having volunteered their time to organizations across our community who serve those in need, the scholarships were well-earned. This year’s scholars, over the last four years, have provided more than 5,900 hours of service to organizations such as the public library, youth sports leagues, nonprofits, and more.

    ELEMENTARY MATHCOUNTS 

    Students participate in MATHCOUNTS 

    On Thursday, elementary students from across the county competed in the 2022 Elementary MATHCOUNTS competition.  

    MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and competition program designed to stimulate students’ interest and achievement in mathematics. This year, several teams competed in a variety of math challenges, including the fast-paced cyphering round, to vie for the gold.  

    We thank all who competed for a job well done, and we congratulate all the winners!

    GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL CELEBRATION 

    Earlier this week, several OCS high school students were recognized for their upcoming or past participation in the North Carolina Governor’s School.  

    Being selected to attend Governor’s School is quite the honor, and this summer, 13 students will represent OCS for this amazing learning opportunity.

    BOE MEETING MAY 3 

    The regular monthly meeting of the Onslow County Board of Education will be held Tuesday, May 3 at 6 p.m. at the Eastern North Carolina Regional Skills Center. Agenda items include the CTE plan, the FY2022-2023 budget proposal, the CCCC Board of Trustee appointment, COVID-19 protocols, and the superintendent contract extension.  

    Immediately prior to the meeting, at 5:30 p.m., a public hearing will be held regarding the budget proposal.

    HOLIDAY/WORKDAY REMINDERS 

    We would like to remind our families that Friday, April 15 is a holiday for OCS, so all district facilities will be closed. Monday, April 18 is a teacher workday, so we will welcome students back on Tuesday, April 19.  

    PURPLE UP! FOR MILITARY KIDS 

     

    Each year, on April 15, people across the nation dress in purple as a show of support for military kids and their families. Though we may not have school tomorrow, we encourage you all to show your support from afar by dressing in purple and showing appreciation for the sacrifices made by the families of service members each day.

    SPRING BREAK/WORKDAY REMINDERS 

    Spring Break Reminder 

    We would like to remind our families that next week, April 11-15, is spring break! Monday, April 18 will be a teacher workday, so we will welcome students back on Tuesday, April 19. 

    During spring break, staff availability may be limited, so please call ahead if you plan to visit a school or the central office. The OCS central office will be open by appointment only Monday, April 11-Thursday, April 14. All OCS schools and offices will be closed on Friday, April 15 in observance of the Easter holiday. 

    Have a fun, safe and restful spring break!  

    OCS ANNOUNCES ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES 

    As OCS prepares for the upcoming school year, Superintendent Dr. Barry Collins has announced several administrative changes, which were approved by the Onslow County Board of Education at their April 5 meeting.  

    All new administrative assignments will be effective July 1, 2022.

    MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD 

     

    April is Month of the Military Child, and OCS is excited to celebrate the military families that make up much of the fabric of our community!  

    This week, we had the pleasure of recognizing 25 schools for receiving Purple Star Awards from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. This designation recognizes schools for their commitment to military children and their families.  

    Thank you to all who serve our nation, and thank you to all of our employees who support the military families in our community!

    OECHS WINS REGIONAL B.O.B. COMPETITION 

    OECHS Battle of the Books team 

    Earlier this week, the Onslow Early College High School Battle of the Books team took home the gold as they competed at the regional level.  

    We are proud of our students’ accomplishments, and we applaud them for their passion for reading and literacy. Congratulations, and a job well done, OECHS!

    Hello, OCS Family! Another great week of learning is on the books for Onslow County! Read below for the latest district news and updates.  

    TRADES DAY 2022 

    A student competes in the welding competition 

    On March 26, over 60 OCS students made their way to Coastal Carolina Community College to compete in the annual Trades Day Event.  

    Trades Day was designed more than a decade ago to help local companies and contractors connect with talented and skilled youth. This event is a partnership between CCCC, OCS, the Jacksonville-Onslow Chamber of Commerce, and many other supporting businesses and organizations.  

    Through competing at Trades Day, high school students taking CTE courses can show off their skills and work ethic in their chosen fields of study. Competitions this year included automotive, construction teams, culinary arts, drafting, electrical, masonry, and welding.  

    Congratulations to all winners and thank you to all OCS students who participated. We are beyond proud of the work our CTE students do each day!

    The application for the Onslow County Schools preschool program is now open! Children who will be 3 or 4 by August 31, 2022 are eligible to apply. You can apply online at www.onslow.k12.nc.us/prekapply or stop by the Thompson Early Childhood Center office at 440 College St. in Jacksonville to apply in person.

    KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION 

    Kindergarten registration is HERE! To be eligible, a child must turn 5 on or before August 31, 2022. Registration will be online, and parents will need to provide a birth certificate, updated immunization records, a parent/guardian photo ID, and proof of residency.

    KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION 

    Kindergarten Registration 

    Parents, brace yourselves... the time for kindergarten registration is here! 

    Kindergarten registration for the 2022-2023 school year will open on Monday, March 28. To be eligible, a child must turn 5 on or before August 31, 2022. Registration will be online, and parents will need to provide a birth certificate, updated immunization records, a parent/guardian photo ID, and proof of residency.

    STUDENTS COMPETE IN BEES

    It has been a buzzing week of bees here at OCS! This week, students from schools across the county competed in the 3rd Grade Multiplication Bee, the Elementary Spelling Bee and the Middle School Spelling Bee.  

    We congratulate all of the winners and thank all the students who took time to compete!
