  • ***All-County Orchestra***

    All-County Honors Orchestra is open to students in 7th and 8th grade.  There is also a high school equivalent that happens simultaneously.

    Requirements

    Students must be members of their school orchestra in Onslow County, be passing all classes, no ISS or OSS within the current school year.  Students are selected by audition.

    The audition consists of 2 parts:  a G-melodic minor scale and an excerpt from the selected concert music.

    Timeline

    Concert music is usually available mid- to late-November.  Auditions are held in January.  The clinic takes place the first weekend of February.

  • ***Jr. Eastern Region Orchestra (JERO)***

    Jr. Eastern Region Orchestra is available to students in 5th - 8th grade.  This is a highly competitive orchestra selected from the top orchestra students in the eastern half of North Carolina.

    Requirements

    Students must be members of their school orchestra in order to audition.

    Participation in this orchestra is selected from a 3-part audition:

    --Scales:  students must learn and memorize 5 scales and arpeggios.  Two will be selected during the audition.

    --Solo:  the solo repertoire is on a 4-year rotation.  For the 2020-2021 school year, the requried solo is Air Varie by de Beriot.  Ask Ms. Zimmerman for this music if you're interested.  A short (8-12 measure) excerpt will be selected during the audition.

    --Sightreading:  students have 30 seconds to silently study the music before playing it for the first time.  Sightreading music is newly composed every year and is usually about 8 measures long.

    Timeline

    Auditions are always held the first Saturday of March.  The clinic is always the first Saturday of May.  When the site locations are outside of Onslow County, our OCS Arts Department provides transportation.

  • ***Solo / Small Ensemble Music Performance Adjudication (MPA)***

    Music Performance Adjudication (MPA) is offered every fall for solo and chamber music (duet, trio, quartet, etc.) student performances.  For this event, the musician(s) will perform for a panel of judges and receive a rating and feedback based on their performance.

    Requirements

    Please contact Ms. Zimmerman for specific requirements if you're interested in participating.

    Timeline

    Solo / Small Ensemble MPA is offered on a Saturday in November.

  • ***American String Teachers' Association (ASTA) Cello / Bass Ensembles***

    The NC Chapter of the American String Teachers' Association hosted its first annual Cello and Bass Ensemble Day in May 2019.  For this event, students and teachers played together in "orchestras" of only cellos and only basses, in addition to receiving instrument-specific technique classes.  The 2020 event has been canceled to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

    Requirements

    Check with Ms. Zimmerman for more information if you're interested in participating.

    Timeline

    This event is scheduled annually on a Saturday in May.

  • ***American String Teachers' Association (ASTA) All-State Orchestra***

    The NC Chapter of the American String Teachers' Association (ASTA) offers an All-State Orchestra every fall.

    Requirements

    Students must be sponsored by a member of NC ASTA.  (Ms. Zimmerman can sponsor you if you're interested!)  Participants will be selected by application, video audition, and teacher recommendation.

    Timeline

    Applications are due by September 19, 2019.  The clinic will take place in Concord, NC on October 18-19, 2019.

  • ***Eastern Region Orchestra (ERO)***

    Eastern Region Orchestra is the most competitive orchestra ensemble available to high school students in North Carolina.  Auditions are open to 9-12th grade students who are members of their school orchestra.

    Requirements

    Participation in this orchestra is selected from a 3-part audition:

    --Scales:  students must learn and memorize 7 scales and arpeggios.  Two will be selected during the audition.

    --Solo:  the solo repertoire is on a 4-year rotation.  The selected solo varies by instrument.  Ask Ms. Zimmerman for this music if you're interested.  A short excerpt will be selected during the audition.

    --Sightreading:  students have 30 seconds to silently study the music before playing it for the first time.  Sightreading music is newly composed every year and is usually about 8 measures long.

    Timeline

    Auditions are held early- to mid-January, and the clinic event is held the weekend of the last Saturday in February.  Onslow County Schools provides transportation to auditions and clinics that are outside of the county.
