Explanation of Tool

    • Step 1 - Students are asked to record FOUR most important points from a reading, lecture, video or other mode of instruction.
    • Step 2 - Students then share and compare their ideas with a partner and come to an agreement about the TWO most important (they can pick and choose from their original ideas, combine ideas, and/or add ideas that were missing from their originals).
    • Step 3 - Pair up pairs and have each pair share and then reach a consensus about the ONE most important idea.
    • Step 4 - Then students write a summary paragraph about the main idea (encourage them to use key points from the Steps 1 and 2 as supporting details).
    • Use students' paragraphs to assess their content knowledge and/or summarizing skills.
