Meet the Band Director: Lance Barton

I was born in Chapel Hill, NC and raised in Burlington, NC. I graduated from Graham High School and immediately studied Music Education at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. During my college tenure, I studied instrumental music and created pedagogy through various performing ensembles and opportunities. During my summers in college I was privileged to work with high school bands across the central and western areas of North Carolina. I served as a section leader for two years and a drum major for one year during my years with Western Carolina University's "Pride of the Mountains" Marching Band. In the fall of 2013 I completed my student teaching at West Henderson High School under the tutelage of Allen Klaes, David Starnes, and Dr. William Bryant. In January of 2014, I served as the substitute band director for John A. Holmes High School and continued to work for Edenton-Chowan Schools as an Interim Media Coordinator for John A. Holmes High School. I am currently in my seventh year as Director of Bands where I am also the advisor for the Student Council. In 2018, I was selected as Southwest High School's Teacher of the Year (2018-2019). Jacksonville, NC is currently home and I have one Schauzer Terrier mix by the name of Ellie Fitzgerald.
