    Dear Parents and Guardians: I am very excited that your child has joined the band. I am looking forward to helping students get the most out of this wonderful musical experience.

    For instruments requiring assembly, the student books contain information about how to do this safely. The books also contain information on essential supplies, care and maintenance procedures, and even instrument history. After your child has had a lesson, ask him/her to show you how to put it together. Give it a try yourself! After a few school lessons, ask the student to give you a lesson! See how well you do in producing sound on the instrument.

    Of course, practicing is essential. It improves performance, resulting in musical satisfaction and fun. Daily practice is a primary goal! A practice log is located on the inside cover of the book. By monitoring and initialing practice time, you and your child will know how much time is spent practicing. Make practice time a special distraction-free time at home. Join in, when you have time. You can keep a beat by clapping or tapping your foot. You can listen and ask questions. Make it a game by having practice time be “rehearsal” time, especially before performances.

    Your interest in your child's progress will make all the difference in the world. Parents who become involved, even a little bit, help children stay motivated. The instruction book we are using, Sound Innovations for Beginning Concert Band™, published by The FJH Music Company, provides a special Parent/Guardian Guide that gives you easy tips on how to help your beginning musician. I would be happy to give you more information about this exciting supplement.
