Dr. Deborah E Lucas

Dr. Lucas has 13 years of experience teaching English in middle school, high school, and college. I have learned that every student can be successful and my biggest sense of accomplishment comes from watching students achieve their personal and academic goals.

I attended the University of North Alabama before joining the US Navy. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to complete my undergraduate work while I was on active duty at California State University, San Marcos. I retired from the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer in 2013 and began teaching English. I completed a Master of Art in Literature with a concentration in Multicultural and Transnational Literature at East Carolina University and recently completed a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership at East Carolina University.

In my free time, I enjoy reading all the books, gardening, and do-it-yourself projects. The most recent project that I am most proud of is a complete remodel of my master bathroom. I had a lot of help, and I learned how to cut tile, reroute plumbing, and install cabinets. I am also very interested in ways to live sustainably, so I am learning how to grow organically, compost, and keep bees.

I have been fortunate to be able to volunteer with the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital for the past five years and more recently with the gardens at Tryon Palace. In an effort to remain a lifelong learner, my next educational goal is to become a Master Gardener.
