                I want to welcome you and your child to my third grade class. I want to give you some brief information about myself and some information about the up coming school year. My name is Tara Sydes. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2002 with a B.A. degree in Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Elementary Education in 2011.  This is my fourteenth year at Summersill and I anticipate a wonderful year ahead.     Important information

     

    • Fees- $6.00
    • One to One Insurance $25.00
    • Lunch Prices: Reduced .40 and full price $2.25
    • Breakfast Price: $1.25
    • Meals can be prepaid by visiting www.k12paymentcenter.com
    • Daily arrival at school 8:05 a.m. and dismissal is at 3:05 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.
    • Car riders, walkers, parent pick-ups, van riders, and boys and girls club members will be dismissed at 3:05. Bus riders will be dismissed at 3:20.
    • Students must arrive before 8:25 a.m. or they are considered tardy. They will need a pass from the office in order to be permitted to class.
    • Students must wear their bus tag for the first two weeks of school.
    • Scholastic book orders will be sent home monthly. If you are interested in purchasing books from scholastic please send in a check in an envelope with your child’s name labeled on it. This is a good way for you to add books to your library at home and for me to earn books for the classroom library.

     

     

    Behavioral Expectations

    Self Discipline:  Monitor your mouth and body movements

     

     

     

     

    Behavior Grades

    Green=No Infractions

    Yellow=2-3 Infractions with an explanation

    Red=4 or more infractions- phone call and or office referral

     

         Any behavior difficulties at school will be dealt with in a pro-active and positive manner.  Should you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.  I believe when the teacher, parent, and student work together children are successful.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Homework

     

         Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday.  Homework assignments are a review of material covered in class.  All assignments are expected to be completed neatly, accurately, and on time. A homework folder will be utilized and is expected to be brought back and forth from school to home daily.

     

    One-to-One Laptops

    Each student will be given a laptop to use during the school year.  A meeting will be held to give parents additional information.  An insurance fee of $25 will be required before students can take their laptop home.

     

    The Planner

     

         The Daily Planner will also be used to record nightly homework assignments and important school information.  I will sign the planner daily to ensure all data is recorded correctly.  The planner is a valuable communication tool between home and school; please review and sign it daily. Each student will fill out his/her planner each day listing homework assignments, upcoming test dates, important events and the daily behavior color.  I will initial the planner at the end of each day.  It is extremely important for you to review the planner each night.  Please sign the planner at the bottom of each day’s date in the comments section.

     

    Weekly Email

    The weekly email will be utilized to keep parents informed. I will email weekly updates, important dates, important assignments, tests, spelling words etc… Please check for my email weekly.

     

     

    Medication

     

         If your child is on medication you will need to get a medication form signed by the child’s physician. Please do not send any medication to school with your child.

     

    Transportation changes

     

         If you are making other arrangements for your children in the afternoon it must be in writing and approved through the office by 2:30 of the given day the change is to be made. In addition to a written note changes can also be faxed in and the fax number is 910-455-2129. 

     

     

    Grading Policy

     

    Missing Work: Any class work that is not turned in or that is incomplete can be completed and turned in. However, all work must be in by the end of the grading period.

     

    Tests: Tests are worth more than class work and test grades will be counted twice in the grade book.

     

    Correct and return work: All unsatisfactory class work can be corrected and returned for an average of the two grades. It is the student’s responsibility to take the materials home that are needed to correct an assignment and to return the assignment to me. Tests & Quizzes can not be corrected for a better grade. On occasion when a test is failed in math I will conduct a tutoring session and the test will be given again.

    Enrichment Schedule 9:25 - 10:10/Friday 8:35 - 10:10

     

    Monday – No Special

    Tuesday – PE (Wear tennis shoes!)

    Wednesday – Computers

    Thursday – Music

    Friday – Art & Spanish

     

     

    Lunch

     

          Lunch is from 12:25 p.m-1:00 p.m. Parents are always welcome to come and join us. Please be sure to sign in at the office if you decide to come and eat with your child.

     

    Snack

    Snack time will be at 10:10 a.m. Please send your child with a healthy snack. No candy or soda is allowed. Sharing snacks is not permitted.

     

     

    Volunteers

     

           I am always looking for parent volunteers in my classroom. If you are interested in being a parent volunteer please let me know.

     

    Monday Binders

     

          A binder will be sent home each Monday with your child. The binder will contain the papers from the previous week. Check for any papers that need to be signed and returned or completed and returned. I ask that you look over the papers with your child and help them work through the papers they did not understand.  In some instances I will give the child the opportunity to correct and return an assignment. Please be on the look out for those papers in the Monday binder.
