International Baccalaureate
About
The International Baccalaureate offers an education for students from age 3 to 19, comprising of four programmes that focus on teaching students to think critically and independently, and how to inquire with care and logic. The IB prepares students to succeed in a world where facts and fiction merge in the news, and where asking the right questions is a crucial skill that will allow them to flourish long after they’ve left our programmes. We are supported by IB teachers and coordinators who develop and promote the IB’s curriculums in almost 5,000 schools globally every day, in over 150 countries around the world. Onslow County IB Schools
At the elementary and middle school level, the IB framework is a school-wide guide. Therefore all students in elementary and middle school are immersed in IB. At the high school level, students experience elements of IB, but may also choose to take individual IB courses or the full diploma or career-related program.
International Baccalaureate Schools
Clyde Erwin Elementary Magnet School, Northwoods Park Middle School and Jacksonville High School have each been certified as IB (International Baccalaureate) World Schools. At each school the IB philosophy along with the NC Standard Course of Study drive the instructional program.
The mission of the International Baccalaureate Organization "aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect."
"IBO works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right."
The Primary Years Program (PYP)- Clyde Erwin Elementary Magnet School of International Studies and Cultural Arts
The Primary Years Program (PYP) is for students in grades kindergarten through five. The PYP program is organized around six transdisciplinary themes of global significance intended to help children engage with their world and the world around them. Students explore each theme through a "unit of inquiry" developed around a central idea. The PYP is very closely related to the conceptual planning process that Onslow County Schools has adopted as its planning and instructional model.
The Middle Years Program (MYP)- Northwoods Park Middle School
The Middle Years Program (MYP) is for students in grades six through eight. It includes all the major disciplines, but is flexible enough to accommodate state and national curricular requirements, as well as facilitating interdisciplinary work. In the final year, students carry out a personal project of particular interest to them. This project may be an original work of art, an essay, a piece of fiction writing, an experiment, or an invention.
The Diploma Program (DP)- Jacksonville High School
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a rigorous two year course of study in the junior and senior year leading to an International Diploma from Geneva, Switzerland. The program utilizes international standards and is based on an integrated curriculum. A primary goal of the DP is an increased global awareness for the students in and out of the classroom. IB students are required to hold the highest of standards in academic honesty. The IB Diploma is recognized by the world's leading universities. Students who do not choose to work toward the Diploma Program may take courses for individual course certificates. There are three "core" areas of study-extended essay (4,000 words), theory of knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Action, Service (CAS).
The IB Career Certificate Program- Jacksonville High School
The IBCC incorporates the educational principles, vision and learner profile of the IB into a unique offering that specifically addresses the needs of students who wish to engage in career-related education. The IBCC encourages these students to benefit from elements of an IB education, through a selection of two or more Diploma Programme courses in addition to a unique IBCC core, comprised of an approaches to learning (ATL) course, a reflective project, language development and community and service.
