The Onslow County School System is home to four AVID National Demonstration Sites including:

  • Northside High School
  • Jacksonville Commons Middle School
  • Southwest Middle School
  • Trexler Middle School

A History of AVID in Onslow County Schools

(AVID) Advancement Via Individual Determination strategies focus on helping underachieving students prepare for and succeed in a four-year college programs, two-year college programs, and career pursuits by giving them the tools, survival schools, and support they need to become motivated, confident students.

The Onslow County Schools System has been involved in AVID since 2004-2005 at the high school level and 2006-2007 at the high school level.

In 2007-2008, nine elementary pilots were instituted in 5th grade classrooms. The following sites successfully incorporate AVID Elementary strategies in 4th and 5th grade classroom practice: Blue Creek Elementary: A School of Scientific Inquiry, Hunter’s Creek Elementary School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, Silverdale Elementary: A Leaders in Training School, Sand Ridge Elementary: A Global Partner, Stateside Elementary: An IMPACT School of National Pride, Northwoods Elementary School of Technology and Innovation, Summersill Elementary: A Mindful School, Richlands Elementary: Communities in Action School, Meadow View Elementary: An A+ School of Music and Cultural Arts, Dixon Elementary: A School of Global Stewardship, Queens Creek Elementary International Green School, Carolina Forest International Elementary School, Swansboro Elementary, Southwest Elementary, Bell Fork Elementary, Morton Elementary, Jacksonville Commons Elementary, and Parkwood Elementary.

 The AVID K-3 Beginnings program was introduced at Summer Institute at Philadelphia in late July 2012.
