Secondary Science: 6-12

6-12 Scientific Instruction

Throughout grades 6-12, students will learn that scientific investigations involve the collection of relevant evidence, the use of logical reasoning, the application of imagination to devise hypotheses and explanations to make sense of collected evidence.  Student engagement in scientific investigation provides background for understanding the nature of scientific inquiry. These process skills support the development of reasoning and problem solving skills.

6-12 Science Safety

Teacher representatives for middle and high schools meet three times during the school year to discuss relevant safety issues and updates. School leads and the Coordinator of K-12 Science engage in relevant, up-to-date science information including standards-based activities, general overviews of science safety, lab procedures, lab activities and reviewing the chemical hygiene rules and regulations.  Our focus is always on how to maintain a safe lab while engaging students at the highest level. Each school should document how science safety training is occurring on each campus and it should be outlined in grade level or departmental meeting agendas and minutes. Up to date chemical inventories should be sent to Dusty Rhodes (dusty.rhodes@onslow.k12.nc.us)  and Rhonda Griffin(rhonda.griffin@onslow.k12.nc.us).
