Visual Impairment Services
Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments work with students who have a documented visual impairment in one or more of the nine areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum:
Compensatory Skills
Orientation and Mobility
Social Interaction
Independent Living
Recreation and Leisure
Sensory Efficiency
Assistive Technology
Career Education, and
Self Determination
Teachers use a variety of assessments to determine if the student’s primary source of literacy is typical or modified text size, large print or braille. If braille is determined to be the primary source of literacy, a Braillist is responsible for transcribing educational material.
Students who require instruction in using their senses to access their environment and to travel safely and independently in their environment receive related services from a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist.
