On Wednesday, January 28th, our Middle School Mathletes met for a day of testing their math skills in a swift and exciting competition.

Seven of our middle schools fielded student teams to engage in different math-related rounds, testing for speed in computation and accuracy. Teams included Dixon Middle, Hunters Creek Middle, Jacksonville Commons Middle, New Bridge Middle, Southwest Middle, Swansboro Middle, and Trexler Middle.

Onslow County Schools is dedicated to improving math instruction across all grade levels, and programs like MATHCOUNTS, a national coaching and competition program designed to stimulate students’ interest in mathematics, help the district increase achievement. Teachers and volunteers coach student “mathletes” beginning each fall, continuing throughout the school year. Participating schools can select four students (and up to two alternates) to compete as a team and as an individual. Students first compete regionally, and winners progress to state contests. The top four scorers and top coach at the state competition go on to represent North Carolina at the national finals.

At this regional competition, students participated in four rounds of challenges, both as teams and individually. Rounds included the “sprint round,” the “target round,” the “team round,” and a fast-paced challenge called the “ciphering round.”

Winners for the individual category were Dominic Bowers from Swansboro Middle in 1st Place, Chayce Durling from Trexler Middle in 2nd Place, and John Trebil from Swansboro Middle in 3rd Place.

Swansboro Middle came out on top for the Ciphering Round, followed by 2nd Place New Bridge Middle and in 3rd Place Jacksonville Commons Middle.

In the Team Composite, Swansboro Middle placed first, New Bridge Middle placed second and Jacksonville Commons came in third.
