Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I become a teacher assistant or tutor?

Applicants must have a minimum of an Associate's Degree or the appropriate equivalent of an Associate's Degree completed at a regionally accredited college or university.

  1. Applicants must have a minimum of an Associate's Degree or the appropriate equivalent of an Associate's Degree completed at a regionally accredited college or university. Equivalence to an Associate's Degree must be determined on an individual basis; however, typically at least 60 semester hours are required.  A 2.5 cumulative grade point average demonstrates academic competence.  Course numbers must be 100 or higher, and grades must be "C" or better. An Associate's Degree equivalence includes the completion of typically required general education courses (i.e. English, Math, Social Science, Humanities). To be considered for a teacher assistant or tutor position, an applicant must demonstrate an adequate academic background in reading, writing, and mathematics. Completed Associate Degrees in education are preferred.
  2. Applicants must complete an online teacher assistant or tutor application and submit any required documents (transcripts, resume, letter of interest, etc.). Teacher assistant and tutor applications can be found online via AppliTrack.
  3. Current TA and Tutor vacancies are posted online through AppliTrack.  Interested applicants may contact the principals at schools with vacancies.
  4. If hired as a teacher assistant, you must complete the 24-hour Effective Teacher Training Program (ETTP) within that same school year.  This course is offered throughout the year.   To register, call 455-2211, extension 71336 or visit the ETTP section of the website.
  5. Pay information (teacher assistant): $2,600.00 entry level, per month for 10 months

Pay information (tutors): Tutors are paid by the hour. Tutors with a valid and current North Carolina teaching license can earn $25 per hour. Tutors who do not hold a North Carolina teaching license can earn $15 per hour.

 

2. How do I become a substitute teacher?

Applicants must have a minimum of a high school diploma (a teaching license is not required) and completion of Effective Teacher Training Program.

  2. Applicants must complete the 24-hour Effective Teacher Training Program (ETTP). This course is offered throughout the year.  To register, call 455-2211, extension 71336 or email ettp@onslow.k12.nc.us.
  3. After completing ETTP, submit a completed online substitute teacher application form along with any other necessary documents (copy of ETTP completion certificate, high school diploma,  college transcript/degree, and teaching license-if applicable).  Only completed applications will be considered.
  4. After submitting a completed application packet, you may be contacted to schedule an appointment for a required panel interview if selected as the best applicant. Please be sure to attend your scheduled interview. If you fail to attend your interview, we will not be able to accommodate you to reschedule until the following school year.
  5. The names of only those applicants selected by the interview panel will be submitted for approval by the Board of Education. If Board approved, applicants will be notified by mail of the employment processing date and time. Applicants must be processed before beginning to substitute teach.
  6. Pay information: Substitute teachers receive salary checks on teachers' paydays for services performed. The pay rate for licensed substitutes (persons who at any time have held a teaching certificate) is $145 per day. The pay rate for non-licensed substitutes is $120 per day.

3. How do I become an AVID Academic Tutor?

Onslow County Schools utilizes the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. This internationally known program seeks to prepare students, especially those in the middle, for success in a four-year college or university. A key component of AVID is the AVID tutor. An AVID tutor’s role is to lead students to their own understanding of a subject through the use of questions. An AVID tutor works with a group of students, not with individuals in a one-on-one setting.

The sessions for tutor participation run for 45 minutes twice a week, either Tuesday and Thursday or Monday and Wednesday. Current AVID Tutor vacancies are posted online via AppliTrack.

Prior to working in the classroom, potential AVID tutors must participate in 16 hours of training. Additionally, district policy requires a criminal background check. This is handled through the Onslow County School System, with no expense on the tutor’s part.

Tutors holding a current North Carolina teaching license will be paid $25 per hour.  Tutors with a minimum of an Associates Degree or an equivalent of an Associates Degree but do not have a current teaching license will be paid $15 per hour.
