AI Technology Update for K-8 Parents
Understanding Onslow County Schools' thoughtful approach to artificial intelligence technology and how it affects your child's education.
✓No Current Plans for K-8 Implementation
We want to reassure you that there are currently no plans to implement generative AI tools in classrooms serving students in grades K-8. This decision reflects our commitment to age-appropriate technology use and allows us to thoroughly evaluate how generative AI can best support learning before considering expansion to younger students.
Our Priority for K-8 Students
We recognize that younger learners need to develop foundational skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity before being introduced to generative AI assistance. Our priority remains ensuring students master essential academic skills through proven instructional methods and meaningful interaction with their teachers.
🔮Preparing for the Future
While K-8 students will not be using generative AI tools in their classrooms, we understand the importance of preparing all students to navigate an increasingly digital world. As this technology continues to develop, we will explore age-appropriate ways to help younger students understand how to safely and effectively interact with generative AI tools they may encounter outside of school.
Our teachers are receiving ongoing professional development about generative AI technology, including its benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations. This preparation ensures that when the time comes to introduce generative AI concepts to younger students, our educators will be equipped with the knowledge to teach responsible digital citizenship and safe technology use.
Current Focus: High School Only
For the 2025-2026 school year, we will be introducing generative AI tools exclusively to our high school students under strict teacher supervision. This allows us to thoroughly evaluate how generative AI can best support learning before considering any future expansion.
What This Means for Your Family
We want you to feel confident about your child's educational experience. Here's what you can count on:
Qualified Educators First
We remain steadfast in our belief that highly qualified educators with high expectations are the most important factor in student success. Technology will enhance—never replace—the human element that is essential to quality education.
Age-Appropriate Approach
Our approach prioritizes the developmental needs of each age group, ensuring that students build strong foundational skills before being introduced to advanced technological tools.
Careful Implementation
Just as we thoughtfully introduced laptops over a decade ago, we believe in being purposeful and guarded when adopting new technologies, always ensuring our core focus remains on quality instruction.
Ongoing Evaluation
We will continue to monitor research and best practices in AI education to make informed decisions about future implementation, always with your child's best interests in mind.
