Preparing Our Students for an AI-Powered Future

Excellence in Education through Innovation and Ethical Technology Integration

The Future of Work is Here

Dear OCS Families,

As we navigate an increasingly digital world, artificial intelligence literacy has become as fundamental as traditional reading, writing, and arithmetic. Our students will enter a workforce where AI proficiency isn't just advantageous—it's essential for success across all industries and career paths.

The reality is clear: Students who graduate with strong AI literacy skills will have significantly better opportunities, higher earning potential, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing career landscapes.

At Onslow County Schools, we're taking a careful, purposeful approach to AI integration—just as we did with our acclaimed 1:1 laptop program over a decade ago. We're committed to ensuring every student graduates prepared for this AI-powered future while maintaining our core values of ethical responsibility and human dignity.

Our approach prioritizes human-centered design, ensuring AI tools serve as complements to educators rather than replacements, while empowering both teachers and students to enhance creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.

The Skills Gap Challenge

Research shows that skill gaps remain the leading challenge for businesses striving for digital transformation, with 63% of employers citing it as a primary barrier. This presents both a challenge and an unprecedented opportunity for our students.

Key Finding: Students with AI literacy skills are positioned to fill critical workforce needs and command premium salaries in an economy where such skills are in high demand.

Our Thoughtful Implementation Approach

Following our successful model from the 1:1 laptop program, OCS is implementing AI literacy through a careful, phased approach that prioritizes safety, ethics, and educational value.

Current Implementation Status

Staff Professional Development

Completed: All OCS staff have access to MagicSchool AI and have received comprehensive training on ethical AI use, including understanding potential biases, privacy considerations, and best practices for enhancing instruction.

High School Pilot Programs

Spring 2025: Successful pilots at Onslow County Early College High School and three classrooms each at Jacksonville High, Northside High, and White Oak High demonstrated positive outcomes and safe implementation.

High School Rollout 2025-2026

Coming Fall 2025: Based on positive pilot results, MagicSchool AI for Students will be available to all high school students under careful teacher supervision and control.

Controlled Access & Safety

Teachers maintain complete control over student AI access through "MagicSchool Rooms," selecting specific tools for each assignment while ensuring data privacy and appropriate use.

Age-Appropriate AI Education Framework

Our research-based approach ensures students develop AI literacy skills at developmentally appropriate levels:

OCS Generative AI Acceptable Use Scale

Level 0: No AI Use
Assessment completed entirely without AI assistance
Level 1: AI-Assisted Idea Generation
AI used for brainstorming and structuring with full disclosure
Level 2: AI-Assisted Editing
AI used to improve clarity and quality of student-created work
Level 3: AI for Specified Tasks
AI completes certain elements as specified by teacher
Level 4: Full AI Use with Human Oversight
AI used throughout with human creativity and evaluation

Important: Teachers determine the appropriate AI use level for each assignment, and students must always disclose when and how AI was used, maintaining transparency and academic integrity.

Alignment with Superintendent Dr. Barnes' Leadership Priorities

Our AI literacy initiative directly supports and enhances each of Dr. Barnes' six strategic priorities:

1

Prioritize Effective Instruction

AI literacy enhances our instructional framework by providing students with 21st-century tools for learning while maintaining high-quality, core instruction standards. Every student, in every classroom, every day benefits from understanding and ethically using AI technologies.

2

Uphold Continuous Improvement Culture

AI literacy education involves ongoing assessment and adaptation as technology evolves. This mirrors our PDSA cycle approach—we plan AI integration, implement with careful monitoring, study outcomes, and continuously improve our methods.

3

Build Internal Capacity

Professional development in AI literacy enhances the skills and credentials of our educators, students, parents, and staff. We're growing our own expertise while preparing students to be leaders in an AI-powered economy.

4

Leverage Parent and Community Support

AI literacy creates new opportunities for family engagement and strengthens our community partnerships. Local businesses need AI-literate workers, and we're preparing students to meet this need while building stronger school-community connections.

5

Inspire Innovation and Opportunities

AI literacy directly supports creativity and innovation while preparing students for future enrollment, enlistment, and employment opportunities. Students learn to use AI as a creative tool while developing critical thinking skills.

6

Create Safe and Secure Learning Environments

Ethical AI education promotes digital safety and responsible technology use. Students learn about privacy, security, and responsible online behavior—essential components of modern safety education.

Our Comprehensive Ethical AI Framework

Onslow County Schools has developed robust guidelines ensuring responsible AI implementation that prioritizes student well-being and educational excellence:

Core Principles

Human-Centered Design

AI tools serve as complements to educators, not replacements, empowering teachers and students while maintaining the essential human element in learning.

Data Security & Privacy

Strict adherence to FERPA, COPPA, and all privacy regulations. Students and staff are trained never to include personally identifiable information in AI prompts.

Accessibility & Equity

AI tools are designed and deployed to ensure equitable access for all learners, including those with diverse learning needs and disabilities.

Transparency

Clear communication to educators, students, and parents about how AI decisions are made and when AI tools are being used.

Student Safety Measures

Built-in Safeguards:

  • MagicSchool AI doesn't "learn" from student prompts, protecting privacy
  • Teachers have complete control over student access through classroom management
  • Students receive mandatory training on appropriate use and potential risks
  • Clear guidelines distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate AI use
  • Regular monitoring and feedback collection ensure ongoing safety

Academic Integrity & Ethical Use

Our approach addresses concerns about academic dishonesty while empowering students to use AI ethically:

✓ Appropriate Use Examples:

  • Explain topics for better understanding
  • Brainstorm and explore ideas
  • Study assistance and review
  • Feedback on work for improvement
  • Help with organization and structure

✗ Inappropriate Use Examples:

  • Using AI without teacher permission
  • Completing entire assignments with AI
  • Not verifying AI responses for accuracy
  • Failing to disclose AI use when required
  • Not revising AI output to reflect personal voice

Our Promise: AI will enhance, not replace, the human connections and relationships that are at the heart of great education. Our teachers, counselors, and staff remain central to every student's success, using AI as one tool among many to better serve each child's unique needs.

Preparing Today's Students for Tomorrow's Opportunities

The question isn't whether AI will impact our students' futures—it's whether we'll prepare them to thrive in an AI-powered world. At Onslow County Schools, we're choosing to lead with purpose, ethics, and excellence.

Our Vision Moving Forward

Similar to our successful 1:1 laptop program approach, we're building AI literacy among our staff first, then carefully expanding to students with appropriate safeguards. Our goal is not to use AI to do the work for students, but to empower them as critical thinkers and ethical digital citizens who can leverage AI as one tool among many.

100% Of OCS staff trained in ethical AI use
Safe Implementation with teacher control and student protection
Future Ready graduates prepared for AI-powered careers
