North Carolina Student Data Privacy Act (NCSDPA) Overview
Background
The North Carolina Student Data Privacy Act (NCSDPA), enacted under state law, safeguards student data collected by public schools and their vendors. Effective since 2016, this legislation mandates secure handling of personal information and transparency, a key responsibility managed by the IT department at Onslow County Schools.
IT Department Responsibilities
The IT department ensures NCSDPA compliance by:
- Maintaining secure data storage and transmission systems to protect student information.
- Evaluating third-party vendors to ensure they adhere to NCSDPA privacy standards.
- Delivering annual notifications to parents and staff about data collection practices and rights through the district website.
Parents or guardians can request details about data collected or opt out of non-essential sharing by contacting the IT department.
District Compliance
Onslow County Schools’ IT team conducts regular security audits and provides staff training to uphold data privacy. All educational technology contracts include NCSDPA-compliant terms. For inquiries or to report concerns, reach the IT Department at 910-455-2211.
