Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Compliance
Background
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), provide standards to make web content accessible to people with disabilities. Onslow County Schools’ IT department adheres to WCAG 2.1 (and is working toward 2.2) to ensure our website and digital resources are usable by everyone, including those using assistive technologies.
WCAG Standards and IT Efforts
The IT department implements the following WCAG principles:
- Perceivable: Adding alt text to images, captions for videos, and resizable text.
- Operable: Ensuring keyboard navigation and avoiding time-based content that requires specific motor skills.
- Understandable: Maintaining clear language and consistent navigation.
- Robust: Supporting compatibility with assistive tools like screen readers.
Regular audits and updates are conducted by the IT team to meet these standards, with ongoing improvements based on user feedback.
