OCS AI Student Pilot
Onslow County Schools is embarking on an exciting pilot program to integrate MagicSchool AI into the educational experience for students at three of its high schools. This initiative will involve three teachers from each school, who will carefully select and enable specific AI tools for their students to use on certain assignments. The primary goal is to leverage AI as a thought partner to enhance student learning, rather than replacing their work or critical thinking skills.
The pilot program is designed with strict guidelines to ensure that AI is used responsibly and ethically. Teachers will have the autonomy to decide which AI tools are appropriate for each assignment, using the AI Acceptable Use Scale as a framework. This scale helps teachers determine the level of AI involvement, ranging from minimal use for brainstorming and idea exploration to more substantial use for studying and receiving feedback. By setting clear boundaries, teachers can ensure that AI supports student learning without undermining their own efforts and intellectual growth.
Students will be trained on the safe and effective use of AI, emphasizing the importance of verifying AI-generated content and maintaining their own voice and style in their work. The program aims to foster a collaborative learning environment where AI serves as a valuable resource for enhancing creativity, critical thinking, and personalized support. This approach aligns with the broader educational goals of Onslow County Schools, which prioritize ethical use, data security, and the development of AI literacy among both staff and students.
Overall, the pilot program represents a thoughtful and measured approach to integrating AI into the classroom. By empowering teachers to control the use of AI tools and focusing on the benefits of AI as a thought partner, Onslow County Schools is paving the way for innovative and effective educational practices that prepare students for a future where AI will play an increasingly important role.
