Transportation FAQ's

The first step to becoming a driver is to fill out an application.  To be eligible, an applicant must be at least 18 years old, have a clean driving record, and possess or qualify for a commercial driver's license with both "S" (school bus) and "P" (passenger) endorsements.  If selected, a classroom and driving test must be successfully completed through the NCDMV.  More information can be found here - Onslow County Public Schools - Frontline Recruitment (applitrack.com)

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s School Transportation division supplies the required maintenance schedule which each bus must undergo every 5,000 miles.  Just like on privately owned vehicles, the service that they receive depends on the total mileage of the bus.

Yes, but unlike personally owned vehicles, North Carolina requires that school buses are fully inspected every 30 days instead of once a year.

Routes are made using a software program called TIMS (Transportation Information Management System).  When creating a route, the district considers factors such as efficiency, distance from school, number of students, and locations suitable for bus stops.

When a bus is 20 years or, or has 250,000 miles on it, it is replaced.   Yellow school buses are replaced by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.  Onslow County Schools purchases white activity buses.
