Mr. Matthew Martinez

Orchestra Director, IB Music SL Instructor

Matthew Martinez is a double bassist and music educator from Clayton, NC. Mr. Martinez has been playing the double bass for 15+ years and has played extensively in professional performing ensembles throughout North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Mr. Martinez performs regularly with the Johnson City Symphony (TN) and has played with the Asheville Symphony (NC). He has experience playing in a variety of musical ensembles, including orchestras, historically informed performance groups (HIP), musicals, opera, jazz ensembles, wind ensembles, and bluegrass groups. Mr. Martinez also has experience tracking movie scores and contemporary music projects at the Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio (Boone, NC).

Mr. Martinez is in his second year of teaching at Jacksonville High School. In his first year, both orchestras within the program received Superior ratings at NCMEA's MPA event held at NC State University and the Cardinal Orchestra received a Superior rating and 1st Place for AA High School Orchestra at the Music in the Parks Festival in Williamsburg, VA.

Mr. Martinez holds a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education (2018) and a Master of Music in Double Bass Performance (2020) from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC

Mr. Martinez currently resides in Jacksonville, NC and lives with Athena, the energetic and mischievous Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog and Atlas, the clumsy German Shepherd!
