Ms. Susan Holder
I have lived my entire life in Jacksonville, NC. Being the daughter of a mother who was a teacher and a father who was a Marine, I learned so much about the value of hardwork, dedication, and love. I have one sister, who now lives in Montana. The 2021-2022 school year will be my 22nd year teaching in Onslow County Schools. While this school year may look and feel different than in years past, we are all in this together!
I seek out opportunities to travel, although I don't travel as much as I would like. Over the course of about 21 years, I have been on a cruise to the Caribbean, visited Florida twice, been on two day trips to New York City, have traveled with two groups of fifth graders to Washington, DC, have traveled with friends to Atlanta, and stayed for a weekend in Las Vegas. In just these past few years, I journeyed to Atlanta, Orlando, Chicago, New Jersey, and New York City (where I have seen 3 off-Broadway plays).
Movies, music, great TV, and dance are just some of my favorite things. My favorite shows are The Office, Outlander, Manifest, New Amsterdam, Jack Ryan, Stranger Things, The Vampire Diaries, Designated Survivor, American Ninja Warrior, and a few others. I was selected as an extra in The Longest Ride as well as a faith-based film called Restoration, and a web series to debut soon. Learning about film is one of my favorite hobbies. I love listening to all kinds of music and dancing. I started taking dance classes at age 5 and have been in band/marching band since middle school. I even went to college playing my flute/piccolo as a member of the Marching Pirates all four years at ECU! So as you can see, the arts bring much joy in my life!
Service learning projects are a way for students to really get to know their community, choose something they want to improve or change about the world, and go out there and be models for change. This is something I feel deeply about and hope to inspire that among students. We WILL engage in many projects and learning tasks that will empower us this year as our focus is TRANSFORM, INSPIRE, AND EMBRACE! LEVEL UP! I love sharing those projects with famous stars that I am lucky enough to meet. One star even made a video for my students to show appreciation for their efforts!
I get my love of sports from my father, who passed away in November 2018. Our favorite baseball team is the Atlanta Braves. Things used to get tense at my house on Sundays, especially when my dad and I watched our favorite football teams battle it out! We always seem to root for the home team Carolina Panthers.
Spending time with my family and friends is what brings me the most joy outside of teaching. Laughing and hugs are truly the best medicine. I look forward to each school day. Teachers are always learning and working with the students brings something new every day. I know we are going to have a great year and I am excited to see what 2021-2022 will bring!
