B.S., Secondary Science Education East Carolina University

Cheryl Cavanaugh

  • My name is Cheryl Cavanaugh and although I have been teaching for 9 years, this is my first year at White Oak. I graduated from White Oak High School in 2001 and am excited about "returning home!"

I received my BS in Secondary Science Education from East Carolina University and completed my student teaching at Farmville Central High School in Pitt County. My first position was teaching Earth Science and Biology at Northside High School for almost 2 years. Being a military family, we moved to Hawaii where I taught Integrated Science and Biology at Waipahu High School for 2 years. Once stationed back on the mainland, I took a position at Union High School in Sampson County where I taught Physical Science and Honors Human Anatomy and Physiology for 3 1/2 years. During this time, I received Union High School's Teacher of the Year 2020-2021 and named a finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching for North Carolina 2021. I taught Physical Science for a short amount of time at New Bern High School but could not resist when a position at my alma mater became available. At White Oak, I will be teaching Earth and Physical Science and am the lead advisor for the National Honor Society.

I have a wonderful husband and four beautiful children: three boys and one girl. When I am not at school or shuffling kids from one location to another, you can find me in my garden, hiking, completing home improvement projects, or at the beach.

I hope everyone has an amazing school year!
