Mrs. Octavia Thomas

Hi my name is Octavia Thomas! I am one of the Exceptional Childrens' Teachers here at Jacksonville Commons Elementary School. This 2017-2018 school year, is my first year here at JCES, and I will be working primarily with 3rd- 5th grade students/teachers as both the Inclusion teacher and the Resource teacher to provide them with the support they need in their General Education classes.

I have been with Onslow County Schools going on 12 years, having started as a Teacher's Assistant in an EC classroom at Hunters Creek Middle School. I have taught 4th-5th grade at Parkwood Elementary and Bell Fork Elementary. Prior to coming to elementary school however, I was a middle school teacher for four years, teaching 6th grade Math, Language Arts and Social Studies at Hunters Creek Middle. Early in my teaching career I had the opportunity to do my student-teaching at Carolina Forest Elementary in a 3rd grade classroom and worked with K-3 children with Autism and those Dually Identified at Morton Elementary.

Every teaching experience I have had, regardless of grade level and school, has been rewarding and has taught me just as much as I have taught the students. I am so excited to work with your child this year, and will do all I know how to help prepare them for the middle school and to be college/career ready.

BRIEF BIO: I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA but as a military spouse, I have spent the past 28 years traveling and moving from state-to-state. When my husband retired from the Marine Corps, we decided to call Jacksonville home. Together we raised five wonderful children who range in age from 29 to 19, and we have two dogs, Rosie and Max. Our family also includes an awesome daughter-in-law and a beautiful 6 year old granddaughter who lives in Orlando, FL. As the widowed spouse of a retired Marine and the mother of a son who served in the Air Force, I have a special place in my heart for our military and their families who serve and sacrifice so much for the freedoms we hold dear. My Faith, Family, and Friends

EDUCATION: I graduated with Honors from UNCW in 2009 with a Bachelors in Elementary Education, K-6. My licensure also includes Middle School Language Arts and Mild to Moderate Disabilities, General Curriculum K-12. I am currently working on my Masters degree in Marriage and Family Counseling to one day open my private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor.
