Odyssey of the Mind
is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
We, at Swansboro Elementary School, are so proud to be a part of this program. Teachers, Teacher Assistants, and parents work together to coach teams of seven students each. Each year we have teams of K-2nd graders and teams of 3rd-5th graders. Students who have been in Odyssey of the Mind in previous years are automatically invited back. Then, try-outs are held for any remaining openings for these teams. During try-outs they are judged on creative problem-solving skills, public speaking, acting, creativity, story writing, teamwork and structure building. Approximately sixty students try out each year to fill the few available positions. These teams practice for a minimum of two hours a week and compete in regional, state and world levels beginning in March of each year.
Our coaches are:
Wanda Conaway - K-2 Team
Jenn Cole - 3rd-5th grade Team - Problem #5
Melanie McGuire - 3rd-5th grade Team - Problem#3
