  • OCS Superintendent Announces Retirement

    Onslow County Schools announces the retirement of Superintendent Rick Stout from the Onslow County School District, effective January 1, 2019. Superintendent Stout’s retirement marks the end of a 32-year educational career serving students across the state of North Carolina. Stout has served nearly 12 years as a superintendent, including the past five years successfully leading the Onslow County School District.

    The Onslow County Board of Education has hired the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) to help facilitate its search for the next superintendent of the Onslow County Schools (OCS).  To that end, the board is seeking direct input from interested members of the community and staff to help shape the search process and to assist in defining the qualities and characteristics desired in the next OCS superintendent.

    OCS Board of Education Extends Deadline for Public Input on Superintendent Search

    The board invites students, parents, and community members to participate in a short community survey that can be accessed and completed online at the links below.  Paper copies of the survey also are available for completion and may be found in the Onslow County Schools’ central office located at 200 Broadhurst Road in Jacksonville.  However, due to Hurricane Florence and its impact on the schools and the community, the board has extended the deadline to complete the online surveys and otherwise provide input to the board. All surveys must now be completed by Tuesday, November 27, 2018, with results to be compiled, summarized, and presented by NCSBA at the regular board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, December 4, 2018.

    In addition, all employees of OCS will have an opportunity to complete a separate online staff survey.  Details about completing the employee version of the superintendent search survey will be communicated via school system e-mail.

    Public Comment at OCS Board of Education Meetings

    Citizens also may sign up to address the board during the public comment period at any of the upcoming regularly scheduled board meetings, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on:

    • November 5, 2018
    • December 4, 2018

    The meetings will be held in the multipurpose room at Blue Creek Elementary School, located at 1260 Burgaw Highway in Jacksonville.  Citizens must sign up to speak at least 10 minutes before the meeting begins and must otherwise comply with applicable board policy.

    Additional Input Through Written Statements

    In addition to input received from the surveys and public comment, local groups and organizations may submit written statements regarding the leadership qualities that they consider important in the next superintendent.  Such statements should be submitted to Allison Schafer via mail at NCSBA, P.O. Box 97877, Raleigh, NC 27624, via e-mail at aschafer@ncsba.org, or via fax at 919-841-4020.  These statements should be received no later than Tuesday, November 27, 2018.
