Student Services
Welcome to Onslow County Schools Student Services! We offer a wide variety of services to our Onslow County families and to those who will soon be enrolling in Onslow County Schools. Some of those services include:
Student Enrollment and Reassignment
Whether you or your child is a current or future student, changing schools is a challenging time for students and their families. We want to help make the enrollment process as stress-free as possible for all of our families who have children eligible for enrollment in Onslow County Schools or who wish to attend a school other than the one determined by a home address. Please follow this link for more information about student enrollment and reassignment.
School Counselors
School counselors provide a counseling program that improves achievement and enhances the academic, career, and social development of all students. The school counseling program is delivered through lessons, individual student planning sessions and individual and group counseling. School counselors collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators and other school staff to promote student success. School counselors also provide leadership and student advocacy. promote equity, and rigorous educational experiences for all students.
School Social Workers
School Social Workers are trained and licensed professionals that provide a link between the home, school and community through support services that positively impact the development of the whole child. School Social Workers engage the school, family, teachers and/or community in a problem-solving process to promote positive change and eliminate barriers to learning. School Social Workers receive referrals from the community, parents, school staff and students when students display poor attendance, failing grades, effects of family crisis and/or emotional and behavioral concerns.
School Social Workers can support parents by helping parents understand their child’s developmental and educational needs; providing access to school and community resources; helping navigate special education services; obtaining mental health services; and providing services for homeless families and students placed in foster care. School Social Workers are available in all of our schools. Please follow this link to learn more.
School Nursing
Our school nurses work in partnership with students, families, school staff, and community agencies to promote student wellness and to address health problems to support student learning. Our school nurses help families and schools develop guidelines to address chronic health concerns, review and monitor medications, provide health counseling, perform vision screens, and other student health-related activities. McKinney-Vento
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act provides assistance to students and their families experiencing homelessness. Please follow this link to learn more.
Athletics
Athletics are a source of pride for Onslow County Schools and our communities. Our teams consistently capture conference, regional and state championships. Our athletic programs strive to provide our student-athletes with an enjoyable and challenging athletic environment which emphasizes the attainment of both physical skills and strong character development, as well as encouraging the lifelong learning process. These programs aim to develop in students: excellent sportsmanship, a strong work ethic, a spirit of cooperation, leadership skills, and important personal character traits. All student-athletes must be in good academic standing and adhere to county and state regulations in academics, attendance and residency.
The school district offers 9 sports at the middle school level and 15 for high school students (not all of the high schools offer all sports). Athletic programs in Onslow County Schools emphasize academic success in the classroom, student attendance in school and good sportsmanship and citizenship on and off the field.
Our high school teams compete under the rules and policies governed by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). Each high school participates in an NCHSAA-approved conference against schools in the surrounding area. Dixon, Richlands, Swansboro & White Oak are currently 3A schools that compete in the Coastal 3A Conference, while Jacksonville & Northside are also 3A schools, but are members of the Big Carolina 3A/4A Conference. Southwest HS is currently a 2A school and competes in the East Central 2A Conference. All 8 of our OCS middle schools compete in the Onslow County middle school conference, along with Brewster Middle School aboard Camp Lejeune.
