A Growing District...
Onslow County is situated on the east coast of North Carolina and is the proud home of US Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, the largest amphibious Marine base in the world. Officially established in 1734, Onslow County encompasses over 767 square miles and has a population of over 200,000 people according to the 2020 US Census - an increase of over 81% over the past 40 years! Named for President Andrew Jackson, the county seat of Jacksonville was incorporated in 1842.
Onslow County Schools is the 11th largest district in the state of North Carolina with over 28,000 students currently enrolled. The district has 41 educational facilities, including 22 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 7 high schools, as well as, an early college high school, an early childhood development center, an alternative learning program and the Eastern North Carolina Regional Skills Center. In fall 2021, OCS opened the Onslow Virtual Elementary and Onslow Virtual Secondary schools to provide an online learning option for our community. On average, our district has increased by 300 plus students per year. To address this growth, the local board of education worked with the county commissioners on funding to build two new elementary schools. Built nearly simultaneously, Coastal Elementary opened in fall 2021, and Clear View Elementary opened in fall 2022.
