Onslow County Schools was one of two hundred thirty North Carolina districts and charter schools to benefit from safety grants provided by the Department of Public Instruction’s Center for Safer Schools (CFSS). OCS will receive $700,000, which includes $682,500 for school safety equipment and $17,500 for training to increase school safety. This was the second-highest amount of grant funds awarded to any single district for this year’s Safer Schools grants.

OCS Superintendent Dr. Barry Collins recognized the importance of this funding in support of the district’s ongoing safety efforts and thanked Chief of Operations Dr. Brendan Gartner and Director of Safety and Security Dusty Rhodes for their leadership in writing the grant.

“Learning happens best when our students and staff have a safe learning environment. Thank you to Dr. Gartner and Mr. Rhodes for writing the grant and for the support of Chief Financial Officer Jeff Hollamon and his staff in the process. Work done previously by Dr. Gartner and Mr. Rhodes, along with our school administrators and law enforcement partners, put the district in a much better position to receive the grant. This is a good return on our investment in safety and security and the work our staff does every day to further our efforts in maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment.”

Collins said district staff are looking forward to implementing the plans outlined in the grant application and recognized the support of the General Assembly for their role in providing funding. “Safety and security is the highest priority for our district. We appreciate the General Assembly’s continuing support for the School Safety Grants along with our state legislative delegation’s support and partnership. They have been extremely important in our ability to provide a positive learning environment for our students and staff.”
