Camp Invention 2019
Camp Invention 2019
June 24-27, Onslow County Schools hosted Camp Invention at Northwoods Elementary School.
Camp Invention, a nationally renowned science camp, gives OCS students entering grades 2-5 the opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, through hands-on activities and experiments. The theme of this year’s camp was “Supercharged,” and the program allowed campers to experience real-world problem solving and creative thinking.
OCS teachers were the instructors for the modules and guided campers through the STEM experiences to help them learn their “certifications,” through learning about safety, tools, critical thinking and the scientific and engineering processes. There to help were high school-age “Leadership Interns” volunteering their time and earning SAT Scholarship hours, as well as middle school students who were “Leadership Interns in Training,” who worked with the younger campers.
The camp’s four stations taught students about the students about farming practices, problem-solving through a “Deep Sea Mystery,” robotics and engineering, and more.
Another theme the 65 campers experienced through all of their activities was sustainability. Students learned about sustainable farming practices, recycling and reusing materials to create something new.
