Teachers Network at SEA Summit
On Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23, nearly 200 educators from across the Southeast region of North Carolina gathered to collaborate and learn from one another ahead of the new school year.
The Southeast Education Alliance is made up of educators from 13 school districts across Southeastern North Carolina, including Onslow County Schools. The SEA is dedicated to developing and supporting education leaders, from district level staff to teachers.
In a series of breakout sessions at this teacher-focused conference, educators had the opportunity to network with other teachers while learning from their peers’ experiences. Sessions covered topics such as technology, serving military children, math strategies, community and classroom culture.
Teachers also had the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker Dr. Donyall Dickey and a panel of educators of the year.
The panel was made up of the 2018 Wells Fargo NC Principal of the Year Tabari Wallace, the 2017 NC Teacher of the Year Lisa Godwin, and the 2019 Southeast NC Regional Teacher of the Year Christy Howe, all of whom serve in the southeast region of the state. Panelists shared their opinions and experiences regarding issues facing public education, teacher retention, school culture, and changing the dialogue surrounding public education.
Dr. Kathy Spencer, president of the Southeast Education Alliance, said that this annual summit is an excellent opportunity for teachers to not only learn new strategies, but to build relationships and support one another.
“They’re able to build networks,” she said, “so that when they leave here and start the school year, they have other people they can call on who teach similar content.”
