Carl Cruthis Named NC Secondary AP of the Year
Carl Cruthis, of Southwest High School, has been named the 2020 North Carolina Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year by the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals’ Association.
Southwest High School organized a surprise pep rally on Friday, October 25 to deliver the exciting news. Cruthis, surprised by the announcement, was moved by the cheers and excitement coming from the stadium stands full of staff and students.
In his remarks during the surprise presentation, Onslow County Schools Superintendent Dr. Barry Collins said, “We truly are blessed to have Mr. Cruthis serving as an assistant principal here in Onslow County, and we value and recognize his contributions here at Stallion Nation.”
Cruthis, recently named the 2019-2020 OCS Assistant Principal of the Year, has been an administrator for three years, all of which have been spent at Southwest High School. Julie Pollock, a SWHS teacher, said Cruthis is “a strong role model for both students and staff” who leads by example.
“I know, you all know, how amazing he is,” Pollock said at Friday’s pep rally, “and how he listens, and he’s fair, and he’s there to help, whether you’re a student or a staff member.”
To end the announcement event in true Stallion style, SWHS Principal Tim Foster asked Cruthis to lead the students in one of his “roller coaster” cheers he is so well-known for at sporting events. In a display of his great relationship with his students, Cruthis and the stands waved from side to side in unison, showing their unity as a school community.
With this award, Cruthis will serve as North Carolina’s representative for the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ Assistant Principal of the Year program, which recognizes outstanding middle level and high school assistant principals who have demonstrated success in leadership, curriculum and personalization.
Next, Mr. Cruthis will compete at the national level for the NASSP Assistant Principal of the Year, the winner of which will be announced at the national NASSP principals conference in National Harbor, Maryland next summer.
