Middle School MATHCOUNTS 2020

February 12 was all about math for middle school students across Onslow County.

Teams from all eight OCS middle schools and Infant of Prague Catholic School, a private school in Jacksonville, gather at Jacksonville Commons Middle School to compete in the annual Middle School MATHCOUNTS competition. Teams participated in several events throughout the day, all designed to test students’ math skills and make learning the subject fun.

MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and competition program that provides engaging math programs for middle students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes towards math and problem solving. Teachers and volunteers coach student “mathletes” and select four students to compete as a team and as individuals in a regional meet in February each year. Winners at the regional level go on to compete at the state level, and potentially, the national level.

“This is an opportunity for students across Onslow County to do what they love … math!” said Dr. Lisa Peele, OCS director of cultural arts and special projects.

Northwoods Park Middle School student Lawrenz Inocando said that the competition gave him, and other math-loving students, the opportunity to do what they do best for an entire day.

“The MATHCOUNTS competition is a lot of fun because all we do is math,” he said. “All of us love math here.”

After a morning of both individual and team challenges, it all came down to the Cyphering Round to determine the winners. In this part of the competition, the mathletes sent representative from their teams to compete in a series of fast-paced lightning rounds.

At the end of the day, individual and team honors were awarded, but win or lose, MATHCOUNTS was a valuable experience for all competitors.
