Calendar Changes for 2020-2021
On Tuesday, May 19, in a special meeting of the Onslow County Board of Education, board members unanimously approved a revised calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. The calendar revisions were made in response to Senate Bill 704 which was signed into law by Governor Cooper on Monday, May 4.
Included in the bill, were provisions affecting school calendars for the upcoming academic year. The changes require that school districts:
- Develop and submit a Remote Instruction Plan to the State Board of Education no later than July 20, 2020. This plan will “provide a detailed framework for delivering quality remote instruction to all students” within the district during the 2020-2021 school year.
- Adopt a calendar which provides for the creation of five remote instruction days.
- Include an additional five instructional days.
- Have an opening date for students of August 17, 2020.
While the revised calendar maintains the same total number of days teachers are working, the new structure and start date allows for changes to the timing of mid-year exams. First semester course exams will be completed on Friday, December 18, and the last day for students will be May 28, 2021, the Friday before Memorial Day.
The Board also approved a staff recommendation to move the district’s two year-round schools, Clyde Erwin Elementary and Northwoods Elementary, to a traditional calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. Under the calendar previously approved, year-round school staff would have returned on July 9, with students scheduled to come back to campus the following week.
“Due to the large number of questions surrounding fall school re-entry, staff recommended making the move from year-round to traditional for the upcoming school year,” OCS Chief Communications Officer Brent Anderson said during his presentation to the Board. “The change will give our families a definite start date for school and make preparations for the fall more effective and efficient for district and school staff as we work on plans for safely reopening in the fall.”
Onslow Early College High School is included in the new requirements for five remote instruction days and an additional five separate and distinct instructional days. The early college calendar approved at the meeting included the additional instructional days and shifted the start for students to Monday, August 3. District and early college staff will work with Coastal Carolina Community College staff on an appropriate placement of the five required remote instruction days.
OCS Superintendent Dr. Barry Collins shared, “We would like to thank the Board for their approval of the revised school calendar for the upcoming academic year. While it was not an easy process, we wanted to move forward with a decision to allow our parents, staff, and community time to prepare. We appreciate their support and understanding and know that having a date for the planned start of school gives everyone, especially our military-connected families, time to make important decisions for the fall.”
