Hello OCS Family! We hope you had a great first week back from spring break. You can catch up on all the latest district news and updates below.
SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE
At a press conference this afternoon, Governor Roy Cooper issued an executive order closing all North Carolina Public Schools for face-to-face instruction through the end of the academic year. In response to the Governor’s announcement, OCS Superintendent Barry Collins releases the following statement:
Schools are essential to our community, and we understand Governor Cooper’s decision to close schools to face-to-face instruction for the remainder of the current school year is disappointing. This means our students will be missing out on many of those things which traditionally mark the end of our academic year. However, we understand the need to prioritize the health and safety of our students, staff and families.
While our school facilities may be closed, OCS will continue to provide remote learning through the end of the scheduled academic year, and our Student Nutrition Hubs and Technology Repair sites will continue operating as scheduled.
District staff will be reviewing the governor’s most recent order and guidance from the State Board of Education to determine the impacts of this unprecedented closure. As we review today’s decision, every step will be taken to provide maximum support and ensure minimal negative impacts to our students, staff and the larger school community.
We appreciate the tremendous effort our staff are giving to provide remote instruction, meet our students’ nutritional needs and address their social and emotional learning. The school district remains committed to continuing support for our school community during this challenging time.
OCS will be reviewing today’s decision and more direction on issues important to our students, staff and parents will be announced in the coming days. We would like to thank our families and the Onslow County community for their support as we move forward.

SBHS COACH HONORED
We would like to congratulate Swansboro High School Athletic Director Kim Miller on winning the NCHSAA's Toby Webb Outstanding Coach of the Year Award. This is a statewide honor that would have normally been awarded at the NCHSAA's Annual Meeting of District Admin, Principals and ADs from across the state in Chapel Hill on April 29.
That meeting was not able to be held this year, but we are still proud of Ms. Miller and her accomplishments. Way to go, Coach Miller!
BOE MEETING APRIL 27
A special meeting of the Onslow County Board of Education will be held Monday, April 27 at 9 a.m.
The meeting will be held in the Eastern North Carolina Regional Skills Center located at 261 Northwest Corridor Blvd., Jacksonville, NC.
Due to the current COVID-19 State of Emergency, to practice appropriate social distancing, and in compliance with the Governor’s Executive Orders, the number of participants present in the meeting room will be limited. A monitor will be available at the Regional Skills Center for limited viewing, but no more than 10 individuals may congregate at one time.
PLEASE NOTE: Agenda items for this meeting include presentation and discussion of the 2020-2021 Capital and Local Current Expense Budgets.
