• Principal's Message January 14 - 18, 2019

    Good Afternoon Parents, students, and staff,
    This is Nehemiah White and Kaitlyn Hierl, with our weekly Colt call for the week of Jan 14 to Jan 18, 2019.  Any information shared in this message will also be posted on the school website. 

    Shout Out to Jade Asher and Tabitha Himsworth.  They will represent SWMS in the All- County Orchestra.  We are proud of all who auditioned!

    We had our first House celebration today.  Congrats to the House of Umai who are currently in the lead with the most points.  

    NC Check-ins Benchmark testing begins next week.  Students will take ELA on Monday, Math on Tuesday and 8th grade Science on Wednesday.  Makeup testing will take place Thursday and Friday.  Please make sure student come to school with a computer and a charger. 
    Additional instructional support in the area of 8th grade Language Arts will be provided two times a week (Tuesday and Wednesday) for students in Ms. Walker’s classes.  These after school sessions begin Jan 15 from 3:15 to 4:15.   If you are interested in participating, please contact Ms. Walker or go through the front office.
    AVID is sponsoring a “Hat Day” on Friday, Jan 18.  For $1.00, students will be able to purchase the privilege of wearing their favorite hat at school all day and at the dance.  Money will be collected by homeroom teachers.  Students will need to display the sticker on their hat.  This is for hats, not hoodies.
    AVID is also sponsoring their first of two service projects beginning Jan 17.  They are collecting items to help struggling and homeless veterans in our community.   Items such as pre-packaged snacks, gallon size storage bags, travel size toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, female products, wet wipes, hand sanitizer and other household products.  A complete list is posted on the SWMS website.  HOUSE points will be awarded to the HOUSE that turns in the most items.  Donations will be given out at the Armory on Feb 4.    
    The last two Athletic Parent meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, February 20th and Wednesday, March 20th.  at 5:30 in the café.  These will be the only dates for the remainder of the year.  Parents MUST attend one of these meetings before their child can try out for any sport for the remainder of the year.  A flyer was sent home earlier this week.  
    Boys Soccer tryouts will begin January 30th.  Students must meet academic and attendance requirements.  Any questions regarding eligibility should be directed to Coach McLeod; any questions about boys soccer tryouts should be directed to Coach Chavez.  
    Remember, yearbooks are still available for order for the low price of $28.00 until February 1st, then the cost rises to $30.00.  Yearbooks can also be personalized for an additional fee.  Yearbooks can be ordered online at Balfour.com or request an order form from the office.
    Parents if you have not returned your fall picture packets, please do so as soon as possible.  Reminder letters were sent home last week.  If you ordered them online, please send in the confirmation number to the school.
    Mark Your Calendar:  
    •    The first set of Interim Reports for the second grading period go home Jan 15.
    •    We have a dance sponsored by the 8th grade on Friday, Jan 18, 3:30-5:30.  Students that have received ISS, OSS or 2 ASD since Dec 21st are not eligible to attend.  Admission in $4.00.  Rides must be at school by 5:30.
    •    There is no school on Jan 21 in remembrance of the M L King Jr. Holiday.
    •    Our Winter band concert is scheduled for Wed, Jan 23 at 7:00 Pm in the SWH Auditorium.

    Parents, just a reminder about our dress code policy on page 13 and the cell phone policy on page 11 in the student agenda.  NC testing protocol mandates that there are no devices present during testing.  We begin NC Check-in testing next week.  Please remind your child and support SWMS with this policy.
